How to do a backflip

Skiing has been around for thousands of years with the earliest evidence of it being ski artefacts found in Russia that date back to 6000 BCE although it is believed skiing has been around for about 22000 years, even before the wheel was invented. Back in the day the purpose of  skiing was not for fun or thrill, it was for survival.

Over time skiing evolved and The first known terrain park was made in 1989 but  was primarily for snowboarders.Freestyling or park skiing blew up in the early 2000s and has since become an ever growing and developing sport, finally getting its own winter Olympic event at Sochi in 2014.

One of the main achievements or goals an aspiring freestyle skier has when they first get into the groove of freestyle skiing is to learn and nail a backflip. A backflip is arguably the most widely known trick on skis that anyone can point out and be amazed at. It is an extremely fun feeling and cool looking maneuver that anyone can do if they can backflip on the trampoline and are quite comfortable with jumps on skis.

One of the first things you have to sort out before even thinking about flipping on skis is to master it on the trampoline. Preferably go bounce with a comfortable trampolinist who can give you tips, support and confidence to help you perfect the flip. You should be extremely comfortable doing backflips on the trampoline  before going out and trying it on the slopes.

I am assuming if you are hoping to try a backflip on skis you are already quite an advanced skier on all terrain and are comfortable getting airtime on reasonably sized jumps. The hardest part of learning a backflip is getting over the mental barrier. As you can imagine it can be incredibly scary to go upside down while on your skis on purpose, especially for your first couple of attempts of a backflip.

Your first few attempts at a backflip on skis should preferably be done on a well made off piste jump that has a steep lip to assist you with flipping and with soft snow in the landing to prevent hurting yourself. Make a smooth run in to ensure you won’t screw anything up while skiing towards the jump.
